It beat the pants off everything else that had ever been released in the states or … I finally got my hands on the The Idiots, the second entry (and most elusive) in Lars von Trier’s Golden Heart Trilogy.It was immediately apparent why the film wasn’t readily available at my local library or on Netflix; it makes Last Tango in Paris seem like a Pixar film. I enjoyed all three movies that made up the trilogy that includes the much lauded Breaking the Waves, The Idiots, and Lars von Trier is many things; subtle is not one of them. It would take too long to list all of the Danish auteur’s moments of notoriety, but we’d do well to remember that behind all of the moments of public nonsense, there lies a very talented, very interesting filmmaker. Lars von Trier (the "von" was adopted during his stay at the Danish Film School) was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in April 1956.
Von Trier’s first three films – all presented in dazzling, baroque virtuosity – are a trilogy about a Europe that has been lulled to sleep in the midst of its own chaos and death.
